Staging Setups for E-Sports

As long as the modern world has access to gaming consoles, VR devices, and computers, e-sports will remain a popular sect of competition. And, as increasing accessibility to high internet speeds weren’t enough, streaming apps like Twitch have widened e-sports audiences tenfold. With the increased international popularity of e-sports has come a demand for regular major e-sports events.

As a modular staging equipment manufacturer, our work finds its way into a variety of different sporting events. We’ve even supplied systems for collegiate tournaments, prestige pro events, and more. We wanted to take a moment to highlight the ways that staging equipment and venue space may be used to help provide participants and visitors with an experience of a lifetime.

The History of E-Sports

First, a few things about e-sports. While access to the digital landscape of electronic sports has only recently boomed, venues and stadiums alike have been hosts to e-sports conferences and tournaments for—believe it or not—decades. In fact, the first ever e-sports event was held in 1972 at Stanford University, in which players were invited to come play the game called Spacewar.

Events like the Nintendo World Championship and professional e-sports leagues began to develop in the decades that followed, a result of the huge boost of e-sports popularity in the ‘90s. Flash forward to recent history – in 2019, The International e-sports series put on a DOTA 2 competition with a $34 million prize pool and a peak online viewership of 1.9 million viewers.

The Typical Staging Needs for an E-Sports Event

So, what about the staging setups for these events? Well, between the volume of visitors and the demand for accessibility—both from an inclusion standpoint and a practical standpoint—staging systems in today’s e-sports world requires more than a few simple risers and guardrails.

Staging systems must enable functionality on the part of e-sports equipment while also guiding, supporting, and protecting hundreds—if not thousands—of guests. In other words, there’s a lot riding on the staging setup. So how does one deliver all of that? The answer: versatility.

Dynamic Staging Equipment Is Key

A well-functioning stage is often overlooked on the part of the venue visitor. After all, the fans are there for the game and often don’t pay attention to the surroundings.

But what enables the experience is the supporting framework embedded in the show or competition. It’s the seating, pathways, railings, and the stage being properly designed and installed that help keep the visitor’s attention on the main event.

The following factors should be considered when designing the layout for an e-sports event.

Portability

Portable staging means multiple configurations are available by using equipment that can be transferred between venues for various settings. Suppose, for example, you had a few video game competitions for which the expected audiences were scattered between spaces on Day 1, while the main event awaited the bulk of guests in one space on Day 2. These would likely require entirely different setups – both for the competitors and for the guests.

Without portable staging equipment, the logistics of an off-hours setup transformation would cause strain on the event and workers. But the ability to move between spaces and rooms and repurpose equipment will make things more efficient and ease the tension for everyone involved.

Modularity

Speaking of efficiency and repurposing – your staging setup is only as good as its ability to enable the aforementioned transformation. Equipment that may only have one use or otherwise lacks customization limits the potential for an event. Modular staging products, however, keep your options open and better meet the various needs of any event by allowing for different setups with the same equipment.

Inclusion

Perhaps the most vital factor that staging equipment should bear for an e-sports gaming event: inclusion capabilities. Matters like ADA accessibility are nothing to take lightly. The quality of an event is only as good as the event’s ability to ensure that everyone has a great experience. From wheelchair ramps to handicap-friendly railing systems, the staging setup should be inclusive and supportive.
