East Texas Symphony Orchestra: A Resounding Performance Space

Performance, East Texas Symphony Orchestra: A Resounding Performance Space

Performance, East Texas Symphony Orchestra: A Resounding Performance SpaceThe Cowan Center at the University of Texas, Tyler, the home of the East Texas Symphony Orchestra, recently received the latest Bravado™ Acoustical Shell from Staging Concepts.  The state-of-the-art system consists of mobile towers and ceiling panels that align to form a resounding, attractive performance space that will enhance the audience and performer experience.

The acoustical shell is made up of curved, reflective surfaces which are designed to reflect the sound energy produced in multiple directions.  Reflected sound energy is blended and focused towards the audience, enhancing their listening experience.  The performers also benefit from the acoustical shell enclosure.  The integrated shell lighting allows adequate light to see their music and surrounding area, while the reflective attributes of the shell allow the musicians to hear their fellow performers and make adjustments.

Due to storage restrictions, the mobile towers were designed to be hoisted off their respective bases into the “fly space”.  Staging Concepts was tasked with designing a custom frame that would allow the towers to be securely fastened to the rigging at the stage level and then slowly raised.

“The disassembly and reconnecting of the towers to the bases is so orderly and quiet that it’s almost anticlimactic,” Alec Stoll, the chosen Theatre Consultant from Stages Consultants said.

Staging Concepts realizes that every performance space has its unique requirements, be it size, shape, finish, weight restrictions, storage requirements and usage.  The Bravado™ Acoustical Shell system is designed to have flexibility to meet these requirements. Q.  What are the main benefits of the Bravado™ Acoustical Shell?

A.  As they say, it’s “all in the presentation”.  The acoustical shell provides an attractive background that highlights the performers to the audience. The background and integrated lighting allows the audience to see and focus in on the performers, delighting parents and friends. Additionally, there are many other benefits- the shell enhances the listening experience with increased acoustics and shell lighting benefits the players.

Q. How is the field changing with the increase in modern technology such as LED lights and fly space rigging/storage?

Staging-Concepts-Bravado-13A. They keys to quality shell design today revolve around the quality of the components and assembly. LED lighting has come such a long way. Now you can power an entire ceiling section’s fixtures with one or two circuits instead of one for each light. That makes them an ideal choice for shells and installers. The future of shell design is about weight, stability and ease of use for both setup and takedown – without compromising the acoustic quality of the shell.

A. We are definitely seeing an increase of acoustical shell opportunities where LED lighting is specified.  Although the initial cost of LED stage lighting is quite a bit higher than typical incandescent stage lighting fixtures, it provides many benefits:

  • LED’s have an extremely long life, virtually eliminating ongoing labor and lamp costs to replace burned out lights.
  • The LED fixture output (intensity and color) is adjusted via programming changes.  This makes it very easy to adjust the lighting design for various performances whereas standard stage lighting is less flexible and more expensive (labor costs, gels) to change.

Q. What does Staging Concept do differently to create a unique acoustical shell?

A. The Bravado™ Acoustical Shell system was designed to be a cost effective yet flexible system appropriate for multiple markets including college/university and school theatres and performing arts centers.  The acoustic panels integral to Bravado™ vary in cost, weight, finish options and acoustic performance.  The panels maximize acoustic performance within the weight restrictions of the typical rigging systems found in the targeted markets.
